About Us

Energy systems are the backbone of modern society. They enable communication, mobility, and heating and cooling of our buildings, but they are also resource-intensive, technically complex, and closely linked to the global climate challenge. Today, the energy supply sector accounts for a substantial share of global greenhouse gas emissions. Transforming these systems towards renewable, resilient, sustainable, and socially accepted solutions is therefore one of the central tasks of our time.

The Energy Science Center (ESC) at ETH Zurich serves as a central hub to address these challenges. ESC’s mission is to advance integrated, interdisciplinary Research and Education, fostering collaboration and bringing together academia, industry partners, policymakers, and society. The ESC acts as a platform for developing innovative solutions and enabling informed decision-making for the energy transition.

Through initiatives such as industry case studies, the Energy Now! programme, Partnership and Entrepreneurship formats such as the Energy Launchpad, teaching formats including the biennal Energy Summer School, and ESC’s annual flagship event, the Energy Week @ ETH, we connect students and researchers with each other, and foster dialogue and transfer between academia, industry, policymakers and the innovation ecosystem.

The ESC is a collaborative network shaped by its Members together with the Executive Office. The Managing Board provides the strategic direction, while the Executive Office supports coordination of Research Projects, daily operations, knowledge transfer, News and Events, as well as partnerships. Collectively, they form a dynamic community dedicated to advancing the energy transition in Switzerland and beyond.

The ESC is organised as a Competence Centre of ETH Zurich. Detailed information can be found in the Download Rules of Procedure. (112 KB)
