The Internet of things – An example of optimized transportation for transporting beverage consumables

Applications of Internet of Things are wide, from home automation to industrial operations. An Industrial Internet of Things solution developed by an ETH spin-off (Smart Home Technology GmbH) is aiming to connect beverage tanks to the Internet and optimize the transportation of beverage consumables.

By 2020, more than 20.8 billion devices will be connected to the Internet and build a network that is able to collect and exchange data using embedded sensors. Analyzed data can facilitate operation and enhance efficiency for industrial companies. Even though the Internet of Tings (IoT) is capable of delivering critical business outcomes, only 5% of companies have been successful in digitalization. Companies’ absence of knowledge in both hardware and software impedes implementations of the IoT.

In Smart Home Technology GmbH, we develop a full-package solution, namely the IoT Concentrator. This solution includes a physical device to collect data and transmit data via various communication technologies (e.g. cellular data, WiFi, Bluetooth, LoRa, etc.) to a cloud platform to present analyzed insights. An example of a key market application for the IoT Concentrator is fleet management for transporting beverages. In general, transportation costs for beverages are way more than the value of beverages. Therefore, route optimization is crucial for beverage companies to reduce their overall costs. With the IoT Concentrator, we are able to collect data on beverage consumption remotely and automatically, predict sales and maintenance needs, suggest more efficient distribution routes and thereafter decrease environmental impacts (e.g. CO2 emission).
