ESC welcomes Erich Fischer as new member

The Energy Science Center (ESC) welcomes Prof. Dr. Erich Fischer as a new member of the competence center.

Prof. Dr. Erich Fischer is an Adjunct Professor in the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at the Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS) of ETH Zurich. Erich Fischer acted as a lead author in the IPCC AR6 and is a co-​lead of the WCRP Grand Challenges on Weather and Climate Extremes. In 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 he was identified as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher. Erich Fischer studied at the University of Bern and Stockholm. In 2007 he completed his PhD at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich. He then worked as a Postdoc at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado and as a visiting scientist at the Unversity of Reading before moving back to ETH Zurich. He his an associate editor of Science Advances and a co-​editor of Weather and Climate Dynamics.

His research interests are:

  • Climate and weather extremes (Mechanisms, observations, detection & attribution and projection)
  • Heavy precipitation events under climate change
  • Heatwaves and heat stress impacts on human health
  • Climate variability, climate projections and quantification of uncertainties
  • Global and regional climate modelling
  • Climate response to volcanic eruptions
