Research Project Coordination
The Energy Science Center (ESC) supports ETH Zurich’s core activity of delivering pioneering research by initiating and coordinating large-scale research proposals, programmes, and demonstration projects. The ESC’s administrative and networking capacities support ETH Zurich's and ESC members' research groups by reducing the barriers to entry and participation in large research consortia and initiatives.
The ESC supports the initiation of new, large-scale research activities in three ways.
- The ESC network and communication channels serve as a forum for ESC members to become acquainted with one another’s work and pressing industry and policy challenges. These connections help generate new research partnerships in an organic, bottom-up process and enable short-term exploratory partnerships.
- The ESC Managing Board and Executive Director directly initiate new projects and consortia by presenting new funding opportunities to ESC Members, identifying interested collaborators, and coordinating proposal writing processes.
- The ESC Executive Office also supports new research within individual research groups by providing ad hoc proposal-writing support.
The ESC supports ongoing research activities and demonstration projects via the staff in its Executive Office. Dedicated project management staff support specific projects to achieve research that goes beyond the activities of ESC Members and ETH Zurich departments. Leveraging the ESC to coordinate research programmes provides a consistent level of support and strategic knowledge transfer, communications, and event planning.
Two ESC staff members supported the external page SWEET PATHFNDR project by coordinating the completion of key reporting deliverables, organising project events, and compiling budget reports for project participants from four departments (D-MTEC, D-MAVT, D-ITET, D-USYS) and eight institutions (ETH Zurich, PSI, EPFL, UNIGE, Empa, ZHAW, TU Delft, and HSLU).
Successful project management directly supports ETH Zurich to deliver high-profile, world-class research and knowledge transfer to society and industry. Staff experts at the ESC Executive Office not only manage these projects but also provide guidance and feedback, thereby adding value to the final research outputs.
